Lets bring the AGUA to NicarAGUA. Again!

As you may recall, during my senior year at Pacific Lutheran University I took part in an amazing service project where I got to go to Nicaragua with a team from my university to build a sustainable water source for a community in need. The success from our previous trips have inspired the students of PLU to get involved again by sending another team to build a well for another village in need of a safe, clean water source.

I invite you to take part again in supporting this wonderful cause.

NicarAGUA in Detail

Why You; Why Us?
You have an opportunity to join with us to help make clean water a reality in Nicaragua. We are a group of 10 students and two staff members from Pacific Lutheran University, and we will be working on your behalf during an Alternative Spring Break project with meaning!

Not Your Typical Spring Break
Rather than choosing to partake in a conventional Spring Break experience, we all wanted to take part in something where we could make a lasting impact with a community and get our hands dirty in the process. We are all eager to meet and work with a community in Nicaragua where we can collaboratively work toward making clean water a reality. During our week there, we will install a well. If everything works as planned, when we leave, the community will have clean water via a reliable hand pump that will deliver clean water for decades.

What is our goal?
Together, we will partner with a community in Nicaragua. Leaders of this community have already approached our nonprofit partner, Living Water International, and asked to work collaboratively with PLU and LWI for clean water. Leaders of the community continue to manage the process, and we work along side this community to help achieve the goal of reliable, clean water. And, it's not just water that is important. We build relationships. We offer hygiene lessons. We offer sanitation education. Why? Because having access to clean water is one thing, but it's how a community USES CLEAN WATER that provides the longest and most systemic change.

As a team, we hope to succeed at bringing the community we'll be working with one of the most basic human rights: the right a healthy life! Our goal isn't to achieve this as a group of 10 students, but as a community of friends, supporters, and advocates who want to create a positive change in the lives of many through making reliable water, education, and lasting relationships a reality. We hope that those who join us on this journey will feel as connected as we do to this project and can see the immense impacts that were made even after we are home from Nicaragua.

Cement is mixed in El Limonal, a site for the 2014 project by PLU students. We can make this happen again.

What to know about Living Water International

Living Water is a faith inspired nonprofit that seeks to provide clean water to communities in need. For over 20 years LWI has worked to fulfill their mission, completing over 15,000 water projects in 23 countries across Central and South America, Africa and India. Not only do they bring safe water to communities that do not have access to it, but they also teach them about general well maintenance, and sanitation and hygiene. By doing this, LWI not only helps those in need but they also empower people to be a part of an independent community.

What to know about NicarAGUA

It is estimated that 1 in 2 people living in Nicaragua lack access to clean, healthy water. The numbers are truly staggering and as a community we hope to help create a healthy and sustainable impact for those who lack life's most basic and important necessity: Clean water.

To achieve this, you can become an integral part of the team. Join us, a group of Pacific Lutheran University students and faculty members along with those at Living Water International, to fund a well, help install it, and provide hygiene and sanitation training; all while working alongside the community in Nicaragua to achieve their dream of a reliable source of clean water.

This project aspires to bring numerous communities together to collaborate and build strong, lasting relationships through the funding and construction of the well- because it indeed, "takes a village to bring clean water to a village."

Cost Breakdown

Part 1: Well Cost → $5,500
This will provide approximately 200 people with clean water for decades! How amazing is that!?
The Math: (don't worry, we do it for you)... $27.50 provides clean water for one person for decades.

Part 2: Well Installation + Community Education (via our team)
Each participant will invest (pay) $2,480 to be able to work alongside of the community.
Together, we can dig and install the well, and also provide critical hygiene training + sanitation education.

This campaign seeks an amount equal to the cost of the well, though we can certainly raise more to help fund the installation and education costs. If your heart leads you to consider an even larger gift to help make this happen, please let us know. We'd love to talk further with you.

The NicarAGUA team in 2014 in the village of El Limonal. Time to bring even more clean water in 2015!

Experiences from the 2014 Project
In 2014, a group of community members, students and friends of the university supported a group of PLU students who traveled to a small community called El Limonal to install a well. The need in this community was significant. There was a feeding center, and on many days the community did not have enough water to even boil rice. Some days, the approximately 300 children who relied on this feeding center for a quality meal would not get a meal because of the shortage of water.

El Limonal is located adjacent to the city dump. A majority of residents survived on less than $2 a day, and about 70% of the residents would either work in the dump or would salvage items in the dump to be recycled or sold for scrap. The well shown above was completed after 4 days of collaborative work with the community. It was hot. The work was hard. But the smiles, they were bright, particularly when the children learned from the hygiene team. It was an incredible experience for the students and the community.

Student Reflections:
“Even though we are separated by thousands of miles, grown up in two different countries and with different backgrounds, to be able to connect so easily was shocking.” - Branden Stallard '16

“I will never, ever again say I am a poor college student - ever in my life! Poor is a deep word, and I think people need to realize that poverty is a serious thing.” - Kaitlynn Cory ‘15

On the induction of the well - “This particular day has helped me understand the importance of water by just having the privilege back in the states of having clean water at any given moment.” - Thomas Horn ‘17

Will You Help Bring Clean Water to NicarAGUA? DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT!
Together, we can make a difference. And, we are excited to share that every dollar you donate will be matched, dollar for dollar and penny for penny by an anonymous donor. This match is good for the $5,500 goal. Your $100 donation becomes $200 of impact, the results of which will help transform lives... not only for those in the community, but the PLU students who will be working in NicarAGUA on your behalf.

Let's make this project and clean water a reality. Thank you for helping bring more agua to NicarAGUA!

(Note: because the $5,500 is matched by a generous donor, the total campaign shows as $11,000).

Make an Impact

Student Special

Give $5

We know being a student is tough, particularly on the monthly cash flow, and you may have to dig deep to find the change to make the investment in clean water. It's worth the dig. Sorry, pocket lint IS COOL but it is not accepted by the bank. At least not yet. Thanks for investing in clean water, and for turning your $5 into $10 thanks to the match!

I'm IN!

Give $10

Your donation is incredibly important, and you can say "I'm IN!" with this gift. Thanks for helping to make clean water a reality and joining our team!

Drill Bit

Give $25

There's not water without a drill bit, just like there's no project without you. Thanks for helping us dig deep!

Fan x4

Give $110

This refreshing amount provides clean water for FOUR people for decades! (BETTER YET, with our generous 1:1 match, you have provided clean water for EIGHT people. TWICE the IMPACT!)

Agua Advocate

Give $220

You have now provided clean water for EIGHT people with this amount! (BETTER YET, with our generous 1:1 match, you have provided clean water for SIXTEEN people. TWICE the IMPACT!)

Partial Pump

Give $687

This is a significant amount towards the materials needed for the well! (BETTER YET, with our generous 1:1 match, you have provided 1/4 of the well cost!)

Aquifer Level

Give $1,375

With this amount, you have provided 1/4 of the funding for the well installation! (BETTER YET, with our generous 1:1 match, you have provided HALF of the well cost!)

Angel Investor

Give $4,960

This generous amount will help cover the investment for two students to work on your behalf in the NicarAGUA project. This experience is transformational, and students who participate in an experience like this see themselves (their self-concept) and their place in the world (their worldview) in a different way. If you feel called to help in this way, you help enable innovative service projects such as this to help shape students for decades to come. As an Angel Investor, you make great things happen. To talk more about making a major gift to this project, please contact Doug Page at page@plu.edu or 253-535-8488.
