Civil Rights & Environmental Justice
Welcome to Nicole Juliano's Personal Fundraising Page!

I believe in developing self reflective leaders grounded in social justice values
As the Assistant Director of The Diversity Center at Pacific Lutheran University I have the opportunity of creating learning spaces outside of a traditional classroom. In these spaces I encourage leadership formation through self reflection, engaging in dialogue, and critical reflection. I am excited to see what positive social change my students make in our communities.
I invite you to promote leaders for positive social change
The Diversity Center
Who are we you might ask? We are the Diversity Center of Pacific Lutheran University. This center consists of individuals who are committed to empowering the PLU community to engage in dialogue, programs, and initiatives that promote and enhance equity, agency, and action. We believe in the importance of critical reflection, perspective taking and community. We aim to inspire the PLU community to recognize and examine assumptions, values, attitudes and emotions and how they guide our actions, decisions and how we choose to interact with others. As members of the Diversity Center community, we are encouraged to explore divergent viewpoints and to take ownership of their membership in multiple communities.
Because History Shapes our Future In connection with the Environmental Studies program, we are planning an Alternative Spring Break trip this March 28 - April 2, 2016 to the American South to utilize Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia as our learning lab to explore historical and contemporary justice issues. Through this experience we hope we will have the opportunity to analyze the relationship between communities, political and social power and environmental quality- a unique opportunity to see the connection between civil rights and environmental justice.
In order for us to make this trip happen we require help from you. The cost of this educational trip will be $1,300 per student. The budget breakdown is as follows:
Budget Update: We had an original goal of $6,500. This goal would have left a remaining program cost of approximately $700 per student. Thanks to your astounding support we have reached our original goal! With days remaining for our campaign, we have been able to increase our USEED goal to $8,000! If we can reach this goal, then each student will only have an out-of-pocket expense of approximately $420! We would be extremely grateful for further support to reach our updated goal, if even just in the form of a Facebook share or a $10 contribution. Again, thank you so much for helping us reach our original goal!
This trip will allows us to create a story map to communicate civil rights and environmental justice narrative of the Savannah and Charleston area. Students will thus be given a platform to explore the political, economic, and social history and the continued impact of segregation in the South.
As developing leaders, this trip offers us the power of global and historical knowledge that will help us achieve positive social change within our local communities.
History, despite its wrenching pain cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again

Thank You!
Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for your help and support! With three days left in our campaign, we are nearing the close. Thanks to you all, we have come so far in such a short amount of time, and it has been an incredible journey already.
Because of your generosity, our new goal of $8000 is almost complete! We are currently 82% there, and with your help and support our goal of $8000 will be completely surmountable.
Soon our students will find themselves face to face with history and culture learning deeply about Civil Rights and Environmental Justice in the South. We can’t thank you enough!
To Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta! Here is the Atlanta skyline we will see very soon with your continued contributions! We are making this trip a reality.
Thank you for your donations to the campaign! We made it to our goal of $6,500.00! WOOOO! At this goal, each student will be able to attend the trip at a $700 cost.
We have raised our goal to 8,000.00 will you help us meet out new goal? Why might you ask? Well, with this goal each student will have a total out of pocket expense of $420.00! This would be a great opportunity to make this attainable for ALL student who have signed up for the experience. $1,500 would help pay for ALL of the lodging for us and would allow us to spend our personal funds on optional cultural activities of our choice. The team is delighted and needs more support to have a holistic experience! We are so close! We have 6 days till our campaign closes, do you think there is anyone in your network that can assist us in our endeavors? If you do, please encourage them and explore our fundraising page! We believe we can do this and with your help YOU are making this learning experience possible! This was was possible with the 81 Community Supporters! YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!
Please share to your network through email or social media!
We want to thank you all again for the support. We are very close to our goal! Here is a video, explaining why this project is important for us and why the we are going!
Again, we are very close to our goal, but we are not there yet. Any support makes a differences, branches or leaves, we appreciate it! Thank you. Happy Monday!
Thank you all for supporting our project!
As you can see we have had an amazing start to our fundraising journey. We thought that having a physical representation of our fundraising progress would be a good idea. That is why we decided to create a fundraising tree. In the keeping of our theme. All the leaves that will be placed on this tree will have all of the names of all of our supporters.
I think that we will experience great progress in the days ahead, but we need to keep motivating people to help out anyway they can. All of your contributions are highly valued and know that you are all contributing to something great.
Thank you again for all the support you are showing us!
Have a great weekend.
Best regards from your
PLU USEED Team
We are super excited
to officially launch our campaign and begin our journey with all of you
supporters today! If you’re wondering about all of the tree references on the
page we have decided that because this experience pushes us all to grow (not to
mention environmental justice focus of the program), that we will let these lovely symbols of
growth, life, and persistence accompany us on our journey.
For any of you who
are interested we will be holding a small cupcake launch party TOMORROW at 1pm in the
Diversity Center celebrating all of the hard work our team has put in to launch
the campaign.
Make sure to check back in every week for new updates, and to see how close we are to reaching our goal!
