NicarAGUA Up Close

Have you ever wanted to contribute to a worthy cause, yet wondered if you'd really have an impact or make a real difference?

Consider this project. Together, we have an incredible opportunity to join with a wonderful community in Nicaragua to achieve the goal of clean water. Join with us - and our team will represent you in the Leon region of Nicaragua. Eight hardworking and passionate servants from Pacific Lutheran University and two members of the Franklin Pierce School District will work on your behalf in Nicaragua. Together, we will be collaborating with a community and the nonprofit Living Water International as agua hunters. We know this project will offer a lifelong impact on the community we will together serve. Imagine the impact: Not only clean water, but knowledge and wisdom through education to help empower the community through personal hygiene and sanitation training, all with the goal of equipping and inspiring children and their families to face future obstacles which stand between them and the lives they aspire to live. This can be the reality by June 10th, 2016!

Sweating for a Cause

Typically, by the time June comes around summer is in full swing and students head off for summer vacation. However, this unique time will be when we can together take part in giving to a community which does not have access to the same critical resources that you have. Imagine being thirsty with few (if any) options for clean water, sometimes lasting days at a time. Collaboration leads to great things, and we are all very excited to meet and collaborate with community members in Nicaragua in a joint effort to bring clean water and teach hygiene and sanitation practices. During the well construction in Nicaragua it will be very hot, and likely very humid, though know that we are ready... ready to work alongside a community to achieve this dream.

It’s About More Than Just The H20

What's really neat is that leaders of a community in Nicaragua have already approached our nonprofit partner, Living Water International, asking for collaboration and the opportunity to work alongside the Pacific Lutheran University and Franklin Pierce team to achieve a reliable source of clean water. Together, we will partner with this community and bring about a long lasting positive change. However, this long lasting change would not be possible without one other important piece of this project. Education. Although clean water is indeed vital to the health, happiness, and empowerment of the community, learning how to use the clean water will lead to the lasting difference we are all hoping to make. During the week in Nicaragua, a well will be installed and adults and children will learn about how to create ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) to combat dehydration from diarrhea, or creating an innovative yet simple 'tippy-tap' to help remove cross-contamination from hand washing. These lessons make a real difference for the community using materials already in the community.

Together with the leaders and community members, we will succeed in helping a community achieve some of the most basic human rights: water, and the right to healthy life. No one should have to wonder whether or not their water will make them sick everyday. We will together eliminate this daily potential of sickness and, by doing so, assist the community in focusing on more fulfilling facets of life, such as additional community development. We will not achieve this alone as a group of PLU/FPSD individuals, but as a community of families, friends, supporters, and advocates who share the same passion for positively changing the lives of others. We hope that you will consider joining us on this journey, and will feel as connected as we do to this project and to the wonderful community in Nicaragua whom we are working with and for. We hope you can see the immense impact will be made through our joint efforts as we share the stories of the community, the people, and the project with you.

Live With Inspiration

Living Water International (LWI) is a faith inspired nonprofit that seeks to provide clean water to communities in need. For over 20 years, LWI has worked to fulfill this mission, completing over 15,000 water projects in 23 countries across Central and South America, Africa and India. Not only does LWI bring safe water to communities that do not have access to it, but they also teach them about general well maintenance, sanitation, and hygiene. By doing this, LWI helps give communities access to clean, safe water in the present while empowering them to be a healthy, independent community in the future.

Needs of Nicaragua

It is estimated that 1 in 2 people living in Nicaragua lack access to clean, healthy water. The numbers are truly staggering and as a community we hope to help create a healthy and sustainable impact for those who are without life's most basic and important necessity: Clean water.

To help make access to clean water a reality for a community, you can become an integral part of the team. Join the team... a group of Nicaraguans, PLU students, faculty members, Franklin Pierce School District members in funding a well, helping to install it, and providing hygiene and sanitation training. Together, we will work alongside the community in Nicaragua to achieve their dream of having a reliable source of clean water. Agua Viva!

Funding Priorities and Cost Breakdown

The priorities are two part: first to fund the well, and then to fund the installation of the well + hygiene education through those traveling to Nicaragua (PLU and Franklin Pierce participants).

Part 1: Well Cost → $5,500

This will provide approximately 200+ people with clean water for decades! How amazing is that!?

The Math: (don't worry, we do it for you)... $27.50 provides clean water for one person for decades.

Part 2: Well Installation + Community Education (via our team)

The Math: Each participant will invest (pay) $2,480 to be able to work alongside of the community. After the well is funded, the second priority is to support those installing the well and teaching in the community. The project will take place June 4-11, 2016.

Together, we can dig and install the well, and also provide critical hygiene training + sanitation education.

This campaign seeks an amount equal to the cost of the well, though we can certainly raise more to help fund the installation and education costs. We are grateful for any amount you are able to give towards this life changing project. If your heart leads you to consider an even larger gift to help make this happen, please let us know. We'd love to talk further with you.

Thank you for helping us bring smiles to a community through your generosity and love to guide us as we bring more agua to NicarAGUA!

THANK YOU

Hello everyone!

As of early this morning, the NicarAGUA USEED Campaign has ended! We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from family, friends, and anonymous donors. With an original goal of $11,000 (that continued to increase), we have raised $17, 410!! It is because of generous donors like you that supported financially, prayerfully, through word-of-mouth and social media sharing. Along with each team member to thank you for making this happen, so does the community in Nicaragua. Because of these donations, diseases will be cured, opportunities for education and growth will emerge, and hygiene and sanitation issues will no longer be an issue. From the bottom of our hearts, we are thankful for each dollar of donations and the people that were willing to support.

If you did not have the opportunity to donate during the month of our campaign, do not fret! There is still a way through the main PLU page. If you select “Giving” on the top right and then “Donate Online”, you will be allowed to fill out all your information for donating. In the comments section, simply write “NicarAGUA: Clean Water Matters.” The donations will be directed to the business office and put with the rest of our trip funds. Please spread the word to any peers or family members who did not have the chance to support during our campaign!

We are looking forward to continuing updating you on the progress of fundraising, as well as personal and exciting stories after the trip! Again, thank you for all of the support in the ways that you have been able. We appreciate you, and so does our community in Nicaragua!!

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team

36 Hours Left!!!

Happy Saturday, supporters!

We have an exciting announcement for you all. As you can see, we have set a NEW GOAL of $15,000. There will be a $500 match when we reach $14,500—and we are so close!! The campaign ends late Sunday night, and we will continue fundraising until then.

Thank you for sharing this opportunity with friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors. Your support is changing and saving lives of individuals. The community is full of gratitude and joy because of supporters like YOU! We are thankful that you have taken advantage of the opportunity to support this community.

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team

3 More Days

Published on Thursday, Apr. 14, 2016 at 10:00 PM (PST)

NicarAGUA Supporters,

We are so thankful for the opportunity to announce that we have surpassed our second goal, only to set a third one! 98% of our $14,000 campaign goal has been reached! THANK YOU to everyone who has donated, shared and supported this campaign. We are down to the last three days and believe that the last 2% can be met with YOUR help. The team has been working hard all month, and we are excited to see how it will benefit the Nicaraguan community in a few short months.

The gifts that you have given will offer opportunities for healthy living, cooking, education, and sanitation skills. Although these may not seem important to our daily living, it will be a luxury to the families that we encounter in Nicaragua.

We cannot wait to bring the reality of clean water to a deserving and loving community. Here is a photo of the team that will be building the well this summer that you have been supporting!

Agua Viva,

The NicarAGUA Team

New Goal!!

Published on Tuesday, Apr. 12, 2016 at 10:49 PM (PST)

Hello everyone!

As of this morning, we have set a new goal for the campaign! We hope to raise $13,000 by THIS Friday.

An assignment for Professor Mulder’s marketing class involves fundraising for the NicarAGUA in the Parkland area and the PLU community. They have been posting signs, holding events, and obtaining spare change at the food markets around campus. The goal is to raise awareness and funds for the project among the surrounding community, especially classmates and professors. Tomorrow morning during Chapel Break, one group will be holding an event in Red Square to allow students to get involved with the project and learn more. If you are in the area, feel free to stop by! Whether it is selling water bottles at athletic events or posting signs in nearby restaurants, we are thankful for these teams and their support towards our project!

As always, keep supporting the team via social media, prayers and financially! We are thankful for everything this far and cannot wait to share stories about our progress.

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team

Initial Goal Has Been Met!

Published on Saturday, Apr. 9, 2016 at 05:25 AM (PST)

Hello NicarAGUA Partners!

As of this afternoon, we are proud to say that we are 100% fund-raised for our initial goal!! We are SO excited and thankful for all the support thus far! Thank you to everyone who donated, prayed and shared about this opportunity to support Nicaragua.

Although our initial goal has been reached, we are not finished fundraising! We still have 9 more days left of the campaign and have set a new goal. After this point, all donations will be divided among the team members. Each of us had personal fundraising pages through Living Water International earlier this year, which was beneficial. However, we appreciate any and all support that is offered through this page!

With that being said, please continue sharing this webpage on social media to help us spread the word!

THANK YOU!!!

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team

Week 2 Update!!

Published on Saturday, Apr. 2, 2016 at 01:04 AM (PST)

Hello NicarAGUA Partners!

The students and faculty of Pacific Lutheran have been on spring break for the last week, but that does not mean we have stopped working towards our goal! One of our team members, Nathan Olson built relationships with multiple businesses around the PLU and Tacoma community to put up posters on “Community Boards” or designated areas. Awareness about the global water crisis is expanding thanks to these partnerships. Special thanks to local stores and businesses that have partnered with us in this project, including various Starbucks locations, Paradise Bowl, Pacific Lanes Bowling Center, Garfield 208, Pita Pit, Farrelli's Pizza, Les Schwab, and Fred Meyer.

Alongside of each of these businesses have been generous amounts of support that provide the opportunity to build the well this summer. With 16 days left, we have raised 88% of our goal! We encourage all of our supporters to spread the word to friends and family in order to continue growing our community. We cannot wait to share this support with our community in Nicaragua, and to continue updating all of you!!

Thank you for joining with us in the journey to provide clean water!

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team

Spreading awareness across Washington thanks to KOMO!

Published on Friday, Mar. 25, 2016 at 06:10 PM (PST)

Hello friends!! As this update is being written, you have helped contribute to 47% of our goal!! We have 24 days left to spread the word, contribute and support our trip to Nicaragua. We are overwhelmed, but also ecstatic to see how quickly we will reach our goal with your help!

In other news, a few of our team members had the opportunity to have a radio interview that was aired yesterday (Thursday). Here’s a link if you want to check it out, and feel free to share it on Facebook with friends and family!

Doubling the Access to Clean Water

Published on Monday, Mar. 21, 2016 at 08:23 PM (PST)

Wow, we are so amazed with the success and support thus far! Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone!!! As of this morning, all the money that is donated will be MATCHED by an individual who deeply cares about the global water crisis. In this way, donating $110 will provide EIGHT people with clean water. The team is so excited about this addition to the fundraiser and hope that all of you are too. Thank you again for the endless support—our community in Nicaragua thanks you.

Best,

The NicarAGUA Team
